Upcycling in August!

Upcycling has become a worldwide phenomenon. It is a movement that just keeps gaining momentum. And why shouldn’t it? This is an effort that will help us become more sustainable. Living within our means is an entirely new concept. Not only is it making us accountable for our choices, but it is a lot of fun doing it!

Countries all over the world are participating in upcycling. Businesses are taking on this new approach as to how they manufacture and produce their items, products, and even services. But now there are workshops and events for every household and family to get involved and become more proactive in the upcycling movement.

At the Manchester Museum in England, they are having a workshop for those who want to upcycle but don’t know how to start doing it. Kate and Hattie are putting this event on Wednesday, August 11th for families and children 7 years and older. They are using techniques inspired by Nature. It’s free for anyone who wants to attend but you still need to book a ticket.

Another wonderful event happening in the UK is on Saturday 21st August 2021. It’s open from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. It’s located at the Alton public gardens in Alton. The admission is free, and there will be a vast array of vintage and retro upcycled items as well as products to help you learn to reuse. But that’s not all. They are also going to be offering repairs and advice for general household items from 10 a.m. to 12:30 pm. So if you don’t know where to start or if you have some items you’d like to upcycle, bring them and take a lesson from experienced upcyclers who have made it their mission to help others learn this exciting new craft.

Here is a fun one for animal lovers. In Des Moines Iowa, there’s an event called “Upcycled Stewards”: it takes place on the third Thursday (August 19th) of August from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Grayslake. It is a joint effort between Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, Blank Park Zoo, City of Des Moines, Confluence Brewing, and Trees Forever. “Upcycle One ‘’ promises to be a wonderful time! Located at Te Manawa Museum 326 Main St, Palmerston North in New Zealand. They are teaching a lot about upcycling and repurposing, but also incorporating a fun aspect. They are using all-natural items in the reconstruction process, such as; dried flowers, stones, and feathers. It’s a very unique experience. It’s sure to awaken the artist in you!

“UPCYCLE” is free and will be held Sunday, August 15th, between 11 am- 3 pm. It will be located at 8 Textile Crescent Salisbury, QLD, 4107 Australia.

Feel free to browse through some “preloved vintage fashion” that is highly affordable and other items that people have repurposed. Nothing is over $20! There will be live music and delicious food while you browse. Contact events@foodconnectfoundation.org.au for more details.

Old Sacramento is putting on their own event, as are most states in this great nation. It will be on August 21. Upcycle Pop @ The Atrium is located at 1020 Front St. It will be held between 1:00 pm — 5:00 pm It is an outdoor market for upcycled and eco-friendly items in the Old Sacramento Waterfront area.

There are too many events to list here in this post. There are markets and Expos going on all over the world in August. Some even lasting through the fall. So no matter where you’re located on this big globe, you can find one near you. I think it has become clear to everyone that upcycling is something that needs to happen for the sake of our future on this planet. The entire world has gotten the picture and it’s really something amazing to see so many countries and so many areas within those countries taking part in this global effort. It is much more than a passing trend, it is becoming a responsible way of life.
